Once you have an agreed roof replacement scope, ask the contractor for preparation instructions specific to your property. The goal is to give the crew safe access and help your household plan around noise, deliveries and work areas. Confirm the details instead of assuming every roofing job follows the same routine.
Agree on access before the crew arrives
Discuss parking, gates, deliveries and the proposed locations for materials and waste containers. Point out fragile landscaping, irrigation equipment or other features that may not be obvious. Ask which areas need to stay clear and when vehicles should be moved.
If you need to leave during the day, plan that route in advance. For a shared driveway or tenant-occupied property, coordinate with the people who use it. Do not assume the crew can move vehicles or enter locked areas without a prior arrangement.
Make a plan for children, pets and daily routines
Keep children and pets away from active work areas, equipment and stored materials. Discuss how you will enter and leave the home while work is underway. If noise will interfere with work, rest or an animal’s comfort, consider another place to spend part of the day.
Tell the contractor about access needs rather than trying to work around the crew after arrival. An agreed contact person can help resolve questions without interrupting workers in hazardous areas. Never approach ladders, lifting activity or falling-debris zones to ask a routine question.
Prepare belongings within safe limits
Move accessible outdoor furniture, decorations and other belongings away from the agreed work zone. Ask about protection for items that cannot be moved. Indoors, discuss whether fragile wall decorations or attic-stored belongings need attention because of vibration or dust.
Only prepare areas you can safely reach. Do not climb onto the roof or enter an unsafe attic to protect belongings. Tell the contractor about inaccessible items so the preparation plan reflects the property rather than creating another hazard.
Confirm how changes and weather are communicated
Keep the project contact number available and agree how you will receive questions or updates. Ask who can approve additional work if concealed conditions are found. Review the process for photos, an explanation and written authorization before changes are made.
Weather, roof complexity and unexpected conditions can affect scheduling. Ask what happens if work cannot proceed as planned and how the crew will communicate the next step. Do not assume a fixed one-day completion time or make other commitments around an unconfirmed finish date.
Plan the completion conversation
Ask how the work area will be cleaned and how you will review completion. Walk the accessible ground-level areas with the contractor when they say it is safe, and discuss any concerns through the agreed contact. Keep children and pets away until the work area has been released for use.
Collect the final scope, warranty documents and any care instructions. If something appears out of place afterward, report it rather than getting onto the roof yourself.
